Ramadon 1420:
Alhamdulillaah, it appears that the new Islamic Center will be ready for Jumu'ah and for
nightly Taraweeh prayers. Through a legacy left by our departed brother Dr. Suleman
A. Paruk, his widow Zubaidah has been able to purchase and renovate a large residence
located on North Main Street in Jamestown. Thus far she has made remarkable progress
on a very tight budget, and alhamdulillaah, has succeeded in opening it to the Muslim
Community in time for Ramadon.
Sister Zubaidah has expressed to me her intention to legally
donate the property to the Islamic Society once the various necessary details are
complete. I will therefore ask our treasurer, Ebrahim Randeree, to start an
"Islaamic Center Fund" to complete the renovations and to adequately maintain
the building and grounds. Please donate generously so that you may share in the
wonderful work begun by our brother Suleman for the sake of Allaah subhanahu wa ta'aala.
Item 1:
At the last Annual Meeting a Constitution and Bylaws written by last year's president, Taariq 'Abdun-Noor, was adopted by unanimous vote. The new constitution did away with the previous custom of electing parliamentary-style officers and established the foundations for the traditional Islaamic government of mashuura. The current head of the Society is an Ameer, who is assisted by a Majlisu Idaarah (Council of Directors) and who makes decisions after holding a Majlisu Shuura (Council of Consultation). The positions of Ameer and members of the Majlisu Idaarah are filled by annual elections by ballot of currently paid-up Members of the Islamic Society of Jamestown.
